There is a white horse in my garden - Photobooks of 2017
I am very happy that my book "There is a white horse in my garden" made it into two lists of "Photobooks of 2017
"Multiple viewpoints are essential components in 10×10 Photobooks’ activities and approaches within the photobook community. Managed by three individuals who come from three different generations and three distinct photography and photobook aesthetics, 10×10’s process of making a “best of” list is an opportunity to embrace differing perspectives." A text about "There is a white horse in my garden" on collectordaily.com
2017 05 17
Thank you so much Olga Yatskevich for these good words about "There is a white horse in my garden".
Actually i would like to quote the complete text, because i can really identify with and feel understand.
The Text of Olga Yatskevich really reflects what I intended when I made the book.
Here are some sentences:
"There is no cover and all the pages look the same, making it resemble a sculpture.
Given that all of Schwalbe’s photographs were taken with a mobile phone, the prints are surprisingly rich and graceful. The book opens with an image of a hand holding a glass jar of fresh raspberries against a roughly painted wall, perhaps typical for a rural house. The picture immediately brings to mind associations with summertime and easy going slowness of the farm atmosphere. Many of the photographs reflect this calmness and tranquility found in village life, their minimalism and stillness setting the tone.
The pictures and stories are about connection, and close observation, and care.
One of the last photographs shows Schwalbe herself heating the kitchen stove. There are no other images of people in the project, but friends and neighbours are indirectly present through some notes in captions (“preparing dumplings with friends”, “raspberries – a present from a garden neighbour” or “cleaning old bricks with friends”). It seems her country life is both solitary and filled with an understated sense of community.
The white horse, enigmatically mentioned in the title, does appear in the book, albeit fleetingly. First, at the very beginning, it is captured in a green garden, looking almost like a white spot. And then in the last photograph, taken a year later, we see the white horse in the meadow, disappearing into the green leaves and flowers. As a metaphor for the elusive and humble pleasures of this house, the white horse, like anything fragile and beautiful in the world, is easy to miss if one doesn’t look more closely.
There is a white horse in my garden can be seen as an artistic extension of Schwalbe’s life on the farm, a meditation on the richness of the small discoveries to made there. Its thoughtful, delicate presentation resembles a lovingly crafted family album, its combination of the mundane and poetic becoming a lasting record of fleeting moments."

Thank you so much Twelve Books for distributing my books in Japan since some years now!
It's really very exciting to see my book "There is a white horse in my garden" arriving in Japan. It took a while to make them, because every book is completely handmade. The first photo is taken by Tomoki Koyoma at his store Choice is Yours. You find "There is a white horse in my garden" in selected bookstores in Japan now.

Handwerk / Handcraft
2017 03 15
I am more and more interested in various handcrafts and I am very happy to be able to try and practise some. I participated at a local basket maker class at the local adult education centre (VHS) - and I learned that you need a lot of power for basket making..
And I sew clothes. Since my youth and now more again in the last years. I am just tired of all the shopping centres and all these big clothing companies.....There is one type of sweater I meanwhile sew for myself several times but also for friends and I plan to put that sweater in my online store. Hopefully soon.
I participated at a ceramics/pottery class at the local adult education centre (VHS) and at Keramikatelier Lichtenberg.
And I am really glad that places and workshops like that exist and hopefully will be supported furthermore..
For the plate you see on the last picture I was happy to collaborate with potter Jutta Altenstein in Berlin.
This glaze is based on wood ash and I really like the grey and brown tones.
