2022 11 10 Gartenkolumne Nr.50 (!) at ZEITmagazin is about the garden of Erentrudisalm near Salzburg.
"Markus Götzenauer, 58, ist der Wirt der Erentrudisalm bei Salzburg. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau hat er das Gasthaus im April übernommen. »Wir hatten 21 Jahre ein Kaffeehaus im Mozart-Wohnhaus in Salzburg. Für mich war es die 100 Prozent richtige Entscheidung, hierher zu gehen.« Bisher war noch keine Zeit für die Gartengestaltung. Und wie die weißen Herbstastern auf die Wiese vor dem Haus gekommen sind, weiß Götzenauer nicht. »Wir haben viele Pläne für unser Gasthaus. Im Garten werde ich erst mal nichts ändern. Hier am Berg sind wir in der Natur. Da ist es grün und im Winter grau und braun und weiß. Wir erleben die Jahreszeiten in einer unberührten Form.« Hinter den Bäumen im Tal befindet sich Salzburg. Weiße Herbstastern sind unkomplizierte Stauden, die viele Jahre lang wachsen und im Spätsommer und Herbst blühen. Sie können jetzt oder auch etwas später gepflanzt werden, solange es frostfrei ist. Astern gibt es in vielen verschiedenen Farben – blauviolett, rosa, lila und weiß."

2022 10 06 There is a new garden column at ZEITmagazin - it's about walnuts and planting walnuts!
"Gerd Flechner, 64, hat lange in der Naturschutzbehörde im Landkreis Stendal gearbeitet und in seinem Leben viele Bäume pflanzen lassen, darunter auch einige Walnussbäume. Er sagt, der Herbst sei ein guter Zeitpunkt, um Walnussbäume zu pflanzen: „Loch in die Erde, Baum rein, anbinden, gießen.“ Walnüsse gehören zu den ältesten bekannten baum- Früchten und sind nicht nur wegen ihres hohen Kaliumgehalts sehr wertvoll. Flechner isst die Nüsse roh oder verwendet sie zum backen, ersetzt etwa Mandeln durch heimische Walnüsse. Von Mitte September bis Mitte Oktober ist Erntezeit. Flechner rät, Walnüsse sofort einzusammeln, wenn sie vom Baum gefallen sind, und dann an der Luft, in der Sonne oder an einem Ofen zu trocknen. Ansonsten besteht die Gefahr, dass das Innere schimmelt. Mit der grünen Fruchthülle werden seit Jahrhunderten Stoffe gefärbt. Je nach Stoffbeschaffenheit ergibt sich ein warmes Altrosa, das ins Bräunliche geht."

Die Gartenkolumne diese Woche im Zeitmagazin handelt von einem Rosenbeet in Berlin, am Pappelplatz in Mitte:
"Im vergangenen Sommer wuchs auf dem Pappelplatz in Berlin-Mitte dieses schöne Gras, das die Rosen einbettete. Da es nicht so angelegt worden war, wurde es kurze Zeit später entfernt. Seit 1983 wachsen die Rosen auf dem Pappelplatz, der ein Gartendenkmal ist - dieses Jahr wieder ohne Gras. Dass es dort überhaupt sprießen konnte, liegt am Personalmangel beim Straßen- und Grünflächenamt (aktuell gibt es 60 offene Stellen) und an Corona: Mehr Leute haben sich in Parks aufgehalten und ihren Müll dagelassen, die Gärtner mussten sich vor allem um die Entsorgung kümmern. Früher pflanzte man in Städten im Frühling Stiefmütterchen, einige Wochen später die nächsten Blumen und so weiter. Heute legt man eher Beete an, die dauerhaft gedeihen und eine höhere Biodiversität haben. Die Grün- flächenämter sind stetig dabei, Anforderungen des Umwelt- und Naturschutzamtes umzusetzen. Für das Gartendenkmal ist geplant, die alten Rosen durch neue, pilzresistente Rosensorten zu ersetzen."

A first Photograph from my series about Sheep. These sheep live on the island Ruegen (Baltic Sea) in the north of Germany. I was so lucky to spend some hours with them on these beautiful hills. I also took there some first photos of meadows several years ago. I am deeply impressed by their peaceful atmosphere. These sheep are called "Grauwolliges Pommersches Landschaf" - they live at sheep farm Westphal.
Bei dieser Verlosung kamen 370 Euro zusammen. Ich habe 185 Euro an Mitost e.V. gespendet udn 185 Euro an UNHCR. Menschen aus Dänemark, Frankreich, Österreich, UK, Japan udn Deutschland haben sich beteiligt. Vielen Dank! Die Gewinnerin des Bildes ist Nina Sieverding, die Autorin des Buchs "Schaf und Mensch".

Die Gärten der anderen - Park am Nordbahnhof at ZEITmagazin

This Feuerdorn (Pyracantha) is growing between birch trees in one of my very favorite parks and it is this week’s Garden Column at Zeitmagazin. Park am Nordbahnhof (5ha) is on the ground of a former station in the middle of Berlin. Later it was directly at the border of East and West Berlin. You can still see some parts of the Berlin wall there. After 1989 it was fallow/abandoned land (Brache). „Trees, shrubs and grasses conquered the area.“ Later landscape architects Harald Fugmann and Martin Janotta planned a park that still has a very wild character with lots of rose hips, meadows and areas for wild bees. This park is an oasis in Berlin.

I thought of two things about your work. I don’t know to what extent you would say they apply. On the one hand, I see a meditative element in your work. And the images are relatively simple. I mean that in a positive manner, not at all as a criticism. They are very quiet. What do you make of that?
AS
Yes, definitely. I like simple things a lot. Simple is totally positive for me.
JC
I also find simple very beautiful. Simple is always the best. That’s one of the most difficult pieces of advice when I work with photographers: in the beginning, keep it simple. You can make it more difficult later. But simple itself is really not so easy. For you it seems relatively easy, though.
AS
When I’m taking pictures, I’m completely immersed in the process and in the picture, more concentrated than anywhere else. I am very focused on the picture. Most of the time I see the framing very quickly. I feel that this is almost like a form of communication with the object or the plant. Sometimes I take a number of frames, sometimes only a single one. For the Japan series, there often is only a single frame.

As an artist, you’ve created an amazing niche for yourself. I can’t think of anyone else who works the way you do and whose sensibility for photography is the same in Germany. If I gave your name and said you live in Berlin, people would certainly not expect your photos to look the way they do.

Ja, auf jeden Fall. Ich mag einfache Dinge sehr. Einfach ist für mich total positiv.

Ich find einfach auch sehr schön. Einfach ist immer das Beste. Das ist immer einer der schwierigsten Ratschläge, wenn ich mit Fotograf:innen arbeite: macht es am Anfang am besten einfach. Schwieriger machen geht dann später, aber einfach ist wirklich nicht so einfach. Aber für Dich scheint es relativ einfach zu sein.

Wenn ich fotografiere bin ich komplett drin im Prozess, im Bild. Beim Fotografieren bin ich so konzentriert wie sonst nie. Ich bin dann wirklich ganz bei dem Bild. Meistens sehe ich sehr schnell den Ausschnitt. Das empfinde ich fast wie eine Kommunikation mit dem Objekt, der Pflanze. Manchmal mache ich auch Varianten, manchmal aber auch nur 1 Bild. Bei der Japanserie gibt es oft nur 1 Bild.

Als Künstlerin hast Du dann schon eine erstaunliche Nische für Dich aufgebaut. Mir fällt nicht so schnell jemand anders ein, der oder die auch so arbeitet und dieses Gefühl für Fotografie hat in Deutschland. Wenn ich Deinen Namen nenne und sage, Du wohnst in Berlin, dann würden die Leute sicher nicht erwarten, dass Deine Fotos so aussehen, wie sie aussehen.
Die Weiden der anderen - Sheep at ZEITmagazin

Sheep! I had the very pleasure to spend some time some weeks ago with these friendly sheep. I am still deeply impressed by the peaceful atmosphere among these sheep. Wool is a topic I am very interested in. And these sheep live on hills I know since some years. I took there some of my first WIESE meadow photos. These sheep are called Grauwolliges Pommersches Landschaf. They make a very warm, grey wool. I have sewn some of my sweaters with that wool fabric. So i am more than happy that I could finally take photos of these friendly sheep around this beautiful landscape.
I took photos of around 440 female sheep. Now they are sheared, in the barn, giving birth to their lambs.
I took many more photos and will be in the colourlab soon to enlarge these. I find them perfectly calming. I dream of a book with these photos.

Sage! Salbei! One of my very favorite plants is this week’s Garden Column topic at Zeitmagazin. Thank you very much Burkhard Bohne for answering all my questions about sage. Now I know that sage grows a bit too well in my garden, there is a very good soil. And every sage plant grows fast. If you want a more intense sage, you can mix some sand into the earth. But I am so very happy with my well growing sage plants and eat sage all year long. There is much more to say about sage, there are a lot of proverbs that underline the healthy benefits of sage. And, it is just a beautiful plant that look good all year long. And it is not eaten by slugs!
